Written by Alan Ayckbourn
Directed by John Miles
The play, one part of Ayckbourn’s ingenious “Norman Conquests” trilogy, covers a traumatic yet often comic family weekend and takes place in the garden of Annie’s tyrannical, yet unseen, invalid mother. The catalyst for the action is a libertine egotistical librarian, Norman, who has tempted his sister-in-law Annie with the prospect of a dirty weekend, and profoundly attracts another, the control-freakish Sarah, before his short-sightedly tolerant wife Ruth arrives unexpectedly. Reg,Sarah’s put-upon husband and Tom, the local vet, whose dithering adoration of Annie never turns into physical action, add to the hilarity and chaos as the weekend moves towards its unpredictable outcome.
