Synopsis:
Blithe Spirit is a humorous play written by Noël Coward about socialite and novelist Charles Condomine, who invites the eccentric medium Madame Arcati to his home to conduct a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. However, the plan backfires when Madame Arcati inadvertently summons the spirit of Charles’s first wife, Elvira, leading to a comedic series of events as Elvira disrupts his current marriage to his second wife, Ruth.
Character Breakdown:
– Charles Condomine: A sophisticated and charming novelist, caught between his two wives – one living and one deceased. Playing Age 35-45
– Ruth Condomine: Charles’s current wife, practical and strong-willed, who finds herself dealing with the unexpected arrival of Elvira. Playing Age 35-45
– Elvira: The ghost of Charles’s first wife – mischievous, witty, and determined to reclaim her place in Charles’s life. Playing Age 35-45
– Madame Arcati: An eccentric and enthusiastic medium, whose séance sets the plot in motion. Playing Age 40+
– Dr. Bradman: A friend of the Condomines, practical and skeptical of the supernatural. Playing Age 35-45
– Mrs. Bradman: Dr. Bradman’s wife, curious and open-minded about the séance. Playing Age 35-45
– Edith: The Condomines’ maid, eager but a bit scatterbrained, adding to the comic relief of the play. Playing Age 18+
